Candelabra

Design Brief

A Candelabra is defined as a large branched candlestick. An example would be the Menorah which originally had seven branches and stood in the Temple symbolising Judaism and the state of Israel. During Hanukkah, candles are lit each night and placed in what is now likely to be an eight branched candlestick, with a ninth used to light the rest. There are many events where candles can both symbolise a special occasion or are used just to provide an atmosphere. Your design brief is to design a candelabra with no more than three branches which can be used decoratively as a centre piece for a dinner party.

Specification

The candelabra must be robust enough to withstand jolts to the table when guests are in contact with the table. Each candle holder must have a base section to collect any melting wax and preventing it from falling onto the table. Decoration may be added to the stem/s or the upright by the use of "twists" in the metal .

Design Criteria

The product will be judged on the quality of finish particularly in relation to how successfully the shaping, forming and joining of the metal through a range of heat treatment processes is achieved.

The aesthetic qualities of the design and how closely it matches the original design idea.
The structure of the product particularly in relation to how robust it is under test conditions. Will it remain upright under normal table conditions?

How effective was the student's planning of the process of manufacture and especially if alternative methods were noted if things had gone wrong.

Evidence of recognising hazards integral to the processes and how information was used to assess risk and the action taken to control the risk to themselves and others.

Needs and Values

The use of candle holders and candelabra is becoming increasingly popular from the small decorative holder made from iron or brass to the multi-stem holder for table use or even the large ornate candelabra which are suspended from the ceiling. They not only provide a decorative ornament but also set the mood for a particular occasion. Examples can be found in most larger stores with, for example, IKEA providing a very wide range of the more rustic styles. Examples can also be found on numerous web-sites by a simple search of the word candelabra.
