Differentiated Tasks
Core Task
Pupils will be expected to extend their sources of information across a much wider area, including historical, cultural and religious sources. They will establish written criteria for their design which demonstrate a clear understanding of structure, materials and aesthetics. From initial sketch ideas they will create a formal drawing from which the artefact will be manufactured. They will experience through focused practical task demonstrations new processes involving hot metal and heat treatment. They will become increasingly skilful in these activities as well as demonstrating and understanding the materials and their properties.
Extended Task
Designing for a specific event and relating the requirements clearly within their design. They will make decisions on their choice of material relating this in detail to the client group. They will clearly communicate their design ideas and should there be conflicting demands on their design they will explain how and why their design has evolved in a particular way. They will be responsible for organising their work and planning for manufacture. They will be expected to interpret focused practical skills demonstrated into accurate and consistent practice.
Support Tasks
Using source material provided pupils will create a simple labelled
idea for a candelabra. With the support of templates they will
cut and shape material. They will use systems set up in order
that they can successfully join material with some precision in
order to meet the structural criteria. Should changes occur in
their design during manufacture they will talk about or record
these in their portfolios.
