SEN learning objectives
A sharing and extension of knowledge presented through individual investigations with a view to the likelihood that the work presented may not match that of core or extended pupils. It is therefore important to ensure that encouragement is provided by highlighting positive aspects of work as well as drawing their attention to elements of work developed by more able pupils as a spur to their improvement. Ensure that, if asked a question it is within their capability to provide an answer.
Lesson context
To review and evaluate the range of ideas and investigative work of the whole class. Sharing and discussing ideas. Enabling the least able and extending the more able.
Lesson structure
(Pre-lesson planning) Display a collage of selected work for discussion. Prepare the available room for the activities. Arrange seating to ensure full participation. If the workshop is not suitable arrange for the use of a spare room. If time allows "scan" or digitise selected work for viewing via computer and LCD display/projector or via print-out on acetate for OHP projection. (Use photocopy machine to enlarge examples if necessary).
- Explain the lesson and the learning outcomes. Sharing ideas and learning from each other. Re-visiting the past three weeks' knowledge. Investigate new ideas and design work of each other.
- Group discussion about homework investigation reports, using a selected range of ideas which identify with the investigation brief. Engage the group in discussion about shape and form, materials and specific elements of designs which have a function as well as an aesthetic quality, for example the concept of safety -a fire risk from "dripping" wax or an unstable structure.
- Group work. Each mini group to evaluate the whole group's discussions regarding the research material and provide a verbal report on the key design considerations for the design and making of a candelabrum to the theme of a dinner party for a specific occasion. This activity is structured in ability groups in order to extend the most able and support the least able.
- Pupil and teacher lesson evaluation. Allow time for the pupils to complete their evaluation diaries. Teacher to complete lesson evaluation.
Equipment and materials
- Pupil investigation material prepared as homework. Computer/display unit/OHP.
Homework
Using the knowledge gained, further prepare design ideas to a stage ready for production. Remind pupils that their design portfolio should also include material and time plans.
