Lesson 6

Core learning objectives

Using their design portfolio as a guide to making, pupils will be supported in the further development of their craft skills. Using previously taught making skills and their understanding of tools, materials and processes they will construct their candelabra. During construction any changes to the design are to be recorded in their design portfolios.

Extended learning objectives

Using their design portfolio as a guide to making, pupils will be supported in the further development of their craft skills. During construction any changes to the design are to be recorded in their design portfolio. Extended ability pupils will be encouraged to work autonomously and to make decisions independently.

SEN learning objectives

After discussion with the teacher, agreement is reached with regard to a design to be made. Further support may be needed in modifying designs and/or preparing templates and/or part made units in order to ensure that a pupil keeps pace and arrives at a satisfactory conclusion.

Lesson context

To ensure that all pupils understand the importance of planning from a drawing and keeping to a work schedule in order to:

  • Complete their task in the time allowed to a high manufacturing standard.
  • Record amendments to their designs should changes be made during manufacture.

Lesson structure

(Pre-lesson planning) check all designs and provide an assessment with feedback.
Ensure that any Special Support Assistant has been fully briefed.

  1. Re-cap on what has been achieved to date. General discussion with pupils regarding their design folders, the quality of their work and the presentation of designs and writing.
  2. Explain that they are expected to read carefully the comments in their design folders consider amendments or additional recommended tasks and tranfer any thoughts to their evaluation booklet.
  3. Discussion regarding cutting list, time schedule and processes (organising their time in the hot metal area).
  4. Core and extended pupils to prepare work schedule and materials list. (extended pupils negotiate with technician)
  5. SEN pupils to be briefed individually about their design work and agreement reached regarding the next stage of making. SSA to support remainder of SEN pupils who are awaiting debrief.
  6. General discussion and evaluation of the lesson. Pupils complete their lesson evaluation notes.
