Candelabra

Lesson 7/8/9.

Core learning objectives

Using their design portfolio as a guide to making, pupils will be supported in the further development of their craft skills. Using previously taught making skills, their understanding of tools, materials and processes they will construct their candelabra. During construction any changes to the design are to be recorded in their design portfolio.

Extended learning objectives

Using their design portfolio as a guide to making, pupils will be supported in the further development of their craft skills. Using previously taught making skills, their understanding of tools, materials and processes they will construct their candelabra. During construction any changes to the design are to be recorded in their design portfolio. Extended ability pupils will be encouraged to work autonomously and to make decisions independently.

SEN learning objectives

After discussion with the teacher agreement is reached with regard to a design to be made. Further support may be needed in modifying designs and/or preparing templates and/or part made units in order to ensure that a pupil keeps pace and arrives at a satisfactory conclusion. (Consider opportunities for team work to produce a number of similar designs.)

  • Ensure that any SSA's available to the class are fully aware of what is required of them so that they are able to support any SEN pupils with portfolio work, assessment and diaries.
  • If the SSA is available, or not, ensure that SEN pupils have sentence and word banks plus any further support sheets which provide assistance with tools, materials and processes other than those contained within their portfolios.
  • Opportunities to observe other pupils or work alongside other pupils

Lesson context

To ensure that all pupils have the opportunity to make their candelabrum with full access to the processes, tools and materials identified within their portfolio.

Lesson structure

(Pre-lesson planning) Prepare the workshop for making activities. (Technician if available) Ensure that the tools, materials and processes are available. (A large group may need to be split in order to ensure that they can be safely managed. If this is the case the teacher may wish to consider the use of a colleague to supervise the main part of the class which can be involved in bench work, whilst a smaller number are engaged in hot metal processes. Alternatively the teacher may be able to use a technician who has been certificated in heat treatment and hot metal processes to supervise the hot metal work whilst they continue with the main group.)

Ensure that any Special Support Assistant has been fully briefed and that, unless they have received some formal training their support is restricted to non-practical activities. You may wish to consider running training for regular SSA colleagues in bench work and the safe use of hand tools. (Remember, regardless of whether they are able to participate in practical activities or not encourage them to wear protective clothing- an apron or coat. Ask that they tie back their hair and remove any jewellery and ties)

  1. Demonstrate procedures for shutting down processes. Re-cap on what has been achieved to date. General discussion with pupils regarding their design folders, the quality of their work and the presentation of designs and writing.
  2. Explain that they are expected to use their design folders throughout the making process and record any changes in design.
  3. Practical activities. Heat treatment, fitting and fixing, finishing and testing.
  4. General discussion and evaluation of the lesson. Pupils complete their lesson evaluation notes.

Satisfactory

The heat treatment and hot metal area is clear of all obstructions.

The fire blanket, sand bucket and fire extinguisher have been checked and are within easy access if required.

Tools and equipment have been checked for fault or defects.

Safety rules are to be carefully taught and reinforced throughout the lesson.

PPE has been checked and is in sufficient quantity.

Careful planning has taken place with regard to group sizes and supervision during the activity.

Staff teaching the activity are certificated in heat treatment and hot metal processes.

A risk assessment has been carried out with regard to any pupil with known behavioural tendencies as to their suitability to be involved in this activity.

Shutting down processes are in place and pupils have been clearly briefed?

Heat treatment work is safely processed prior to medium term storage?

Lesson evaluation

To be completed at the end of each lesson by the teacher. Assessment to inform future planning. How well did the group learn? Were targets met? Do any aspects of the lesson require improvement? Did any particular pupils perform well or otherwise?
