CELEBRATION: Casting
Casting provides the young designer with the opportunity to create shapes which otherwise would not have been possible. Coupled with the use of the technology provided by Computer Aided Manufacture and Computer Aided Design (CAD/CAM) as shown in the example below which is one of the range of machines which form a part of the Denford Virtual Reality suite.

Examples of CAD design using the software provided as a part of the CAD/CAM initiative to schools.

Examples of outcomes produced from designs using the Artcam CAD/CAM initiative for schools.

The CAD/CAM for schools initiative is a national scheme
supported by the DfEE, DATA (the Design and Technology Association)
and two software suppliers, Delcam and PTC. It aims
to increase the use of 3D design software in secondary schools
in the UK, by providing free software licences for schools.
Not having the facilities for CAD/CAM does not preclude the designer from designing for cast metal. Pattern making can be crafted by hand to create the result required. Young designers will need to know the constraints and information within the Information section on Metal Melting and Casting will provide valuable help and advice.
