CELEBRATION: Wrought Iron

Specification

Metal worked on an anvil has a grace that belies its strength and is particularly suited to the creation of an artifact which could reflect the diversity of links to be found in both rural, coastal or industrial areas.

Iron work can provide ambitious projects and the work of Andrew Jones from Launceston College in Cornwall is testament to what can be achieved.

This work, seen on site, received a design award from The Design Council. (copyright The Design Council)

Focus Practical Tasks

Making and Fixing Scrolls

Scrolls are used more than any other motif in wrought iron work. Their variety and grace enhances any design. When developing a scroll much depends upon the proportion, the fineness of taper and how tightly the scroll is rolled.

Developing Twists

In all decorative work, a sense of design is essential if  good craftsmanship is not to be spoiled by clumsy lines. Look at the examples given in the resource section of this project where  interesting and varied designs are provided.
