Focused Practical Tasks
- Demonstration on cutting the blank disk from 20 gauge copper.
Drilling the hole and finishing the edges of the new shape with
file and abrasive. Ensure that issues related to clamping the
blank before drilling, ensuring the drill guard is in place
and that goggles are worn before proceeding are covered. Demonstrate
how to slightly shape the surface of the blank using a mallet
and sandbag. Explain the reason for turning the edges down.
- Demonstration for enamelling. Clean surfaces and heat in a
Flamefast kiln until
dull red, about 700°C. Explain that the shape must be thoroughly
dried and that touching the surface with greasy fingers will
affect the process of enamelling. Paint the surface of the blank
with gum or cellulose adhesive. Shake the base enamel over the
surface making sure that the whole area is covered. When dry,
fire for 60 seconds. Repeat for each colour. When the last colour
is fired keep a check to ensure that the surface of the enamel
is flat and that over-firing does not take place. Remove scale
with abrasive or diluted sulphuric acid and rinse dry and paint
with lacquer to prevent tarnishing.
- Demonstrate how to fix a loop which is then soldered for
security.
