Aesthetics A set of principles of good taste and appreciation of beauty.
Celsius. a scale of temperature on which water freezes at 0° and boils at 100° under standard conditions.
Copper. A malleable and ductile non-ferrous red-brown metallic element.
(Malleable: able to be hammered or pressed out of shape permanently)
(Ductile: capable of being drawn into wire; pliable, not brittle.)
Champlevé. The oldest techniques with hollows carved or etched out of the surface which are then filled with enamel and fired.
Cloisonné. Ornamental craft in which thin metal strips are soldered in a pattern on to a metal surface, and the resulting compartments (cloisons) filled with coloured enamels and fired.
Enamelling Oven. An oven with basic controls which quickly brings the temperature up to 800°Celsius at which glass melts. The oven door has a glazed window which allows for the process to be observed.
Over Firing Over firing is avoided by constant visual checks through the glass window of the oven. Firing should be long enough for the enamels to form a flat surface on the copper blank.
Sgraffito. The drawing on a second enamel coat with a pointed tool after which a second firing takes place.
Scrolling. Takes place when molten enamel of a second colour is dragged through the base enamel with a scrolling tool.
Sulphuric acid. A dense oily colourless highly acid and corrosive fluid.
Texture. The feel or arrangement of a surface or substance
Turning down edges .Edges are turned down after the disk has been slightly domed in order to prevent distortion of the shape when fired.
