Lesson Five

Core learning objectives

Using previously taught skills they will produce an orthographic drawing of the screwdriver to be made. Pupils will draw plans of how they intend to manufacture the screwdriver. These plans will communicate their ideas. Pupils will use these plans to manufacture their screwdriver. Through discussion pupils will gain an understanding of how they will use these plans to check their work as it develops

Extended learning objectives

Using previously taught skills they will produce an orthographic drawing of the screwdriver to be made. Pupils will produce plans of what will be made. Through discussion pupils will gain an understanding of how they will use these plans to check their work as it develops. They will then suggest alternative ways of fixing the handle to the blade with added suggestions if using wood, metal or plastic handles.

SEN learning objectives

Using previously taught skills they will complete a part orthographic drawing of the screwdriver to be made. Pupils will produce a step by step plan on the processes for the manufacture of their screwdriver. They will identify these through discussion and support sheets. With the help of prepared work sheets they will be able to identify the tools, materials and processes used in the making of their screwdriver

Lesson context

To ensure that all pupils understand the importance of working from a drawing and keeping to a work schedule in order to:

  • Complete their task in the time allowed to a high manufacturing standard.
  • Make record amendments to their work should changes be made during manufacture.

Lesson structure

(Pre-lesson planning) Produce handouts on the working drawing layout. A parts list and SEN handout to aid the selection of tools, materials and processes.

Ensure that any Special Support Assistant has been fully briefed upon the SEN handouts.

Orthographic and isometric drawings of what they intend to make. Step by step plan of screwdriver manufacture. A cutting list and information on processes and key words used. (see dictionary skills, knowledge and understanding)

  1. Re-cap on what has been achieved to date. Discuss with pupils their folders, the quality of their work and the presentation of drawing and writing. Inform pupils that whilst they are on "task 1" I will be reviewing their folders and giving feedback.
  2. Provide each group with their handout - ask them to consider what each handout contains.
    · SEN group. Explain what is expected from them. Go through each part of the worksheet ensuring that they understand the task.
  3. Check that core and extension groups understand what is required. Test
  4. Orthographic drawing of screwdriver to be made.
  5. Discussion regarding cutting list, key words and processes. Explain this will form part of their homework.
  6. Using differentiated handouts pupils will produce a step by step plan of how they will make the screwdriver. Provide overview demonstration for the whole group. Provide added support to SEN group.
  7. General discussion and evaluation of the lesson. Pupils complete their lesson evaluation notes.

Equipment and materials

  • Differentiated handouts
  • Drawing equipment

Homework

Extended group to record alternative ways and methods for fixing the handle to the blade with added suggestions if using wood, metal or plastic handles. Complete the cutting list and process grid on orthographic layout.

Core group: Complete the cutting list and process grid on orthographic layout.
SEN group: Complete the part filled cutting list and process grid on orthographic layout.
