Lessons 8 and 9
Core learning objectives
Pupils will demonstrate their capability on lathe work producing the facing off of their set piece and the centre drilling of a hole in which the screwdriver handle will be secured. They will further increase their skill through the taper turning of the handle. They will continue to demonstrate their skills and knowledge of drawing their blade and through point hardening and tempering and filing and finishing towards a quality finish.
Extended learning objectives
Those pupils working to their own design will with the necessary support extend their lathe skills for the turning and shaping of their handle. They will continue to forge their blade demonstrating their understanding of the processes of point hardening and tempering. Through discussions with the teacher they will be able to demonstrate their increased skills and knowledge when using forge, lathe and hand shaping and finishing techniques.
SEN learning objectives
With support where required pupils will be able to demonstrate their ability to forge their blade. They will use tools with some accuracy in order to shape the blade and then point harden and temper the blade. With support they will face off the handle and centre drill the face. They will be able to explain to the teacher what they know, understand and can do in relation to the processes learned. They will with the necessary support complete all the tasks ready for screwdriver assembly.
Lesson context
Focused Practical Tasks in the use of tools, processes and procedures related to forging, lathe work, shaping and finishing.
Lesson structure
(Pre-lesson planning) Preparation of equipment. Risk assessment of activities in relation to the group and viewing of the activity. Personal group and viewing of the activity. Personal protective equipment(PPE) for teacher and for pupils.
- Re-cap on what has been achieved to date. Refresh the group's memory regarding the previous demonstration on hardening and tempering, lathe work, and filing and finishing. Test their knowledge and understanding through questioning.
- Re-enforce the safety aspects, rules when working within the heat treatment area and on the lathe. Remind pupils of the booking system. The essential use of PPE.
- Demonstration on hardening and tempering
- (A large group may need to be split in order to ensure that the numbers watching the demonstration can see and be adequately questioned regarding their understanding. If this is the case the teacher may wish to consider the use of a colleague to supervise the main part of the class which can be involved in the writing up of notes whilst the teacher carries out the demonstration to a small group in rotation. Alternatively the teacher may be able to use a technician who has been certificated in heat treatment and hot metal processes to do the demonstrations whilst they continue with the main group.)
- Working in forge area forge -drawing down the blade of the screwdriver and for a square taper.
- A large group may need to be split in order to ensure that
they can be safely managed. If this is the case the teacher
may wish to consider the use of a colleague to supervise the
main part of the class which can be involved in cutting their
blades to length and receiving a demonstration on the lathe
on a rotation basis. Alternatively the teacher may be able to
use a technician who has been certificated in heat treatment
and hot metal processes to supervise the hot metal work whilst
they continue with the main group).
General discussion and evaluation of the lesson. Pupils complete their lesson evaluation notes.
